Kev Becks 2015

We met in France in 1993, working for an outdoor holiday company in the Ardeche valley. We said then that perhaps one day we’d move to France.

Becks originally studied at university in the hospitality industry and has worked in catering continually since she graduated. Kev went to agricultural college after school and has worked in horticulture and ecology ever since.

After returning to the UK in 1994 we lived in Edinburgh, Scotland for 10 years while furthering our professions. Becks held a partnership in a catering company with three busy outlets in the city and Kev worked at Holyrood Palace and Park, situated in the heart of the city.

During this time we continued our holidays to France, on several occasions to the Pyrenees, finding the Couserans area the most compelling and alluring.

We finally sold up in Edinburgh and arrived in the Ariège department of the French Pyrenées in January 2005. Our vision was to find a traditional stone building, in the hills, with some land, which we could turn into a « chambre d’hôte » business, working for ourselves and reaping the rewards from rearing our own Gascon pigs, Ariegoise sheep, egg laying chickens and maintaining a seasonal vegetable garden. Having already viewed what is now « L’Ancienne Bergerie Chambre et Table d’hôte » as a former sheep barn, in September 2004, our offer was accepted and we moved in April 2005.

It took four years for us to renovate, which for us became a huge learning curve whilst developing skills we’d never envisaged. General building, water proofing the interior walls, reinforcing the walls, roof work, windows, carpentry – stairs, doors, floors and finally experimenting with natural materials for the finished look i.e.: insulation, clay renders, woodwork, locally hand crafted terracotta floor tiles, paints and lime wall finishes.

Becks has always had a passion for food and through her research, testing and experience she has now found the perfect medium to share this with our clients. Kev’s lifelong interest in natural history, gardening and wild food obviously ties in very well with Beck’s culinary skills and together they have found a home where they can marry all these things for our guests here at L’Ancienne Bergerie.
